How can I teach my child to put away his toys? 12 January 2010
I guess you are fed up with all the mess in your child’s room. You ask him not to make it messy, but he keeps doing it. Do not give up, have a little patience and think:
- What compromise can you make with the scattered toys?
- Are you a model of behavior for your child? Do you manage to keep your house tidy? If the answer is “yes", then you can easily explain to your child that everyone in the family has their obligations which they must observe. For example, your duties are to wash the dishes after dinner, to do the laundry, to clean, daddy’s duties are to throw the garbage, to replace the bulb, and your child has just a few duties, one of which is to put his toys in order, after he has finished playing with them, so that there will be room for the next game. Otherwise, the room becomes a chaos and he may loose his favorite toy among the piles of scattered things.
- Start by helping him to put his toys away and later encourage him to do it on his own. You should ask him, not order him to do it.
- Explain to him that it is good to be clean and tidy, while you are helping him to arrange his toys.
- Use different baskets and colorful bags.
- Separate the toys according to some order- for example put the plush toys in the red basket, the dolls-in the pink and the small toys-in a colorful bag.
- Play some interesting game while putting away the toys. For example- the doll is going to bed (in the box), the big elephant is going to take a rest in the corner.
- Try to teach your child to arrange his toys before he goes to bed.
- Last but not least-take into consideration your child’s age and his abilities, when you explain to him what his duties are.
